DIY: Make a Pullover Into a Coat

Hello lovelies! I took a little trip to the Rose Bowl Swap Meet at the beginning of February, and got this awesome vintage sailor jacket from the US Navy. It was a big pullover-style wool coat, and although it's awesome as-is, I decided it would be a little more flattering if the front was open (like a coat). Here's how I did it:

(the finished product)

You will need:
Measuring tape/ruler
A pullover jacket you want to cut into a coat!!
Bias tape
(not pictured) a sewing machine
(optional) good tunes!!!!: Junk Of The Heart - The Kooks

#1: Measure the middle point on the collar and on the hem, and connect the line with chalk.

#2: Cut the line you just drew; don't worry if it's not perfectly straight, you're going to cover it with bias tape!

#3: Measure the bias tape (I chose black to match the black of the jacket) so it covers the raw edge, plus a tiny bit more.

#4: Pin the tape around the raw edge.

#5: Sew down the bias tape twice in order to secure it.

#6: Repeat on the other raw edge. Now you have a super cool jacket that shows your super cool shirt/dress/whatever you're wearing underneath!

I love my jacket. It's so cool... it even has the name of the guy that owned it written on the tag! It's my own little piece of US history.

Hello lovelies! This past summer, I bought a dress at the Abbot Kinney Street Festival in Venice Beach, California with my mom from a brand called DAWN. I've since followed them on Instagram (@shopdawn), and their photos are so dreamy; the dresses are beautiful and their whole aesthetic is so lovely.

A few days ago, I saw this photo they posted of Taylor Swift in the music video for her song "Style," and looked it up to find out she actually wore the dress backwards... which inspired me to do the same with my DAWN dress.

@shopdawn: @taylorswift wearing our Fitzgerald Dress in her new music video "Style"

The style of dress that I bought has a pretty deep neckline in the front, and I would definitely get in trouble at school for breaking dress code (don't even get me started, I will go on a feminist rant): it's a perfect excuse for me to wear the dress backwards.

Dress: DAWN
Boots: Dr. Martens
Jacket: Identity
Sunnies: Ray-Ban

I love Taylor Swift, and I love DAWN dresses. I got multiple compliments on my outfit, and I'm so excited I discovered this new way to wear my (too many) dresses - I can't wait to try it out on all of them!

DRAWING: self portrait

Hello lovelies! Today I wanted to share a little painting/drawing I did recently. It's of myself (from a photo my friend took of me in art class), and I used watercolors and sharpie to create it.

This photo isn't the best quality ever, and in real life, the splashes of color are pales blues and purples. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I also need to think of a title for this one!

I've found a bit more time to do art lately, which is great; I need to get in the habit of making more art. Being a prolific artists helps both technical and creative skills, two things I need to work on.

Hello lovelies! This week, we had Monday off of school as it was President's Day in the U S A. It was one of my friend's birthdays, so we surprised her with a little brunch at a cute restaurant in our town.

I got my adidas pin from a penpal from Norway (!!!) and my other pin is from the Keith Haring exhibit in San Francisco.

Sadly, no one was home to take photos of me today, so this awkward selfy will have to suffice. I was wearing a vintage top from the Melrose Trading Post, and a skirt from Reformation. Not pictured is my black Arizona Birkenstocks (of course, what other shoes do I wear?).

MALIBU: Lunch & Shopping

Hello lovelies! This past sunday, I met up with a friend who I haven't seen for a while with our moms in Malibu. We went for brunch at Malibu Farm Cafe, an adorable restaurant on the end of the pier that I've never eaten at (but everyone else seems to have).

Here's part of the view from the top of the restaurant, where we ate. The food was great and I will definitely go back soon. For sure a recommendation for anyone that lives in the Los Angeles area... it's worth the trip down to Malibu!

After brunch, we walked down to the Malibu Countrymart and popped into Urban Outfitters for a pop-up event they were having. There was a little raffle as well as a few cool venders, and (surprisingly) my name was picked out of the jar, so I won this adorable silver stone ring!

Here's an in-store selfy to show you what I was wearing:

Shoes: Birkenstock
Dress: Boutique
Sweater: Comme Des Garçons
Bag: Vintage Coach
Sunnies: Ray-Ban

PALISADES SUNSET: American Apparel, Comme Des Garçons

Hello lovelies! This Valentine's Day, my friend and I (who were each other's Valentines) planned out a day of shopping, eating, and watching the sunset. How romantic!!

She showed me this cool swing that overlooks the oceans, so of course we had to take pictures.

Then we walked down the coastline to a spot where we could watch the sunset.

I was wearing a grey cardigan from Comme Des Garçons, and my friend had her matching CDG converse on. I mean, it was Valentine's Day, we needed to wear the adorable little hearts!!

The sunset was unreal over the California coastline.

Aaaand here's me looking stupid and towering over the Pacific Ocean!
Cardigan: Comme Des Garçon
Dress: American Apparel
Socks: Amazon
Shoes: Dr. Martens

I hope everyone had a lovely Valentine's Day... I sure did!

Hello lovelies! Last week at my high school, it was Spring Spirit Week; this basically means we had different themes every day and had to dress up in a costume/outfit that went with the theme. The themes included 'Merica Monday (all patriotic gear), Class Color (each grade has their own, mine is white), 80s Workout Wednesday, Sand vs. Snow Thursday, and Valentine's Day Friday.

When you put a bunch of teenagers in one building and allow them to break usually-strict dress code to wear costumes and looks stupid, you get some pretty interesting outfits. For the Sand vs. Snow theme, one of my friends in my English class mixed a bunch of floral/Hawaiian-like prints for his themed dress. I asked to take a picture of him after class, which is the reason for my terrible photoshop skills - I tried to get rid of the weird whiteboard background. My apologies.

I wore this cool vintage Diane von Furstenberg Hawaiian shirt, birkenstocks, and a denim circle skirt from American Apparel.

I just loved the way his socks almost matched his shorts, and the flamingo print on the shirt, even though it was totally unrelated to the floral print, worked really well due to the same color scheme. Honestly, most students don't aim to be fashionable on these spirit days, but whether it was intentional or not, I thought this outfit was great. Also - this is a first of Visions of NYC: men's fashion??

OLYMPUS 35RC: Me Trying To Figure Out How To Work A Film Camera

Hello lovelies! Last weekend, I visited the Rose Bowl Flea Market with my friends as a fun thing to do on a Sunday. I ended up buying some really great stuff: two pieces of clothing (that will be featured in another post), and this awesome Olympus 35mm camera.

All I did was clean up the metal and superglue the lens cap to the little string that keeps it attatched to the camera strap so I don't lose it. The camera is in pretty great condition. The star sticker was not there when I bought it. It's my personal touch :)

One of my friends that was on our little Flea Market trip is really into photography, so I had him make sure all of the technical stuff works; I've never owned or used a real film camera with lots of functions (just my Diana F+ and Lomo'Instant, which are relatively easy to learn/use). I'm going to get some film soon and figure out how to shoot cool photos... I've even found the original manual in PDF format online. The camera is from the 70s, and as with all old cameras, I feel like taking photos on it will just transport me back in time. Film is so beautiful, anyways.

If anyone has any tips for me on how to work this (ISO/ASA, F-Stop, shutter speed, etc) I would greatly appreciate it. Camera-speak is a foreign language to me.

Hello lovelies, Happy Valentine's Day! This morning, I was greeted by my mom with adorable little heart pancakes - they were even pink! She also got me a few little gifts for Valentine's Day, including #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso (creator of NastyGal) and adorable washi tape. As I do every year, I've created a little "love" themed playlist of some of my favorite songs.

Yummy heart pancakes!

My mom also got me these adorable knee socks. I love knee socks... I'm totally wearing these today.

Chapter #2 of #GIRLBOSS. I'm actually so excited to finally read this... I've heard about it everywhere on the internet since it was published, and although I've never actually bought anything from NastyGal, I love browsing through the online shop. I got to visit the NastyGal boutique location on Melrose Avenue a few weeks ago, and the clothes (and the huge shoe display) amazed me. I definitely recommend to stop by if you're in the Los Angeles area!

I was being stupid on my trip to Japan last Spring, and I didn't by any washi tape. My mom got me these two little rolls of cute tape from Scotch (I think), and I can't wait to use it in my penpal letters and to stick stuff up on my wall! So cute.

Here's a little playlist of Valentine's/Anti-Valentine's Day songs. I don't know how to feel about the whole "significant other" thing on Valentine's Day... I prefer self-love and just appreciation of the concept of looooooove. But, I mean, if you're feeling bitter about a past love and are dateless on this Valentine's Day, give "You Don't Love Me" a listen.
