OUTFIT OF THE DAY: Keith Haring & Alexa Chung

I feel like I should be in some high school movie from 1994. Is that the right time period placement? It's honestly all blurry for me... not like I was alive then anyway.

We aren't allowed to wear blue denim at my school (it's not part of the dress code), but my grade won a spirit game last week, so we got to wear jeans today. It's 90 degrees, so I ditched the pants for my favorite skirt, Alexa Chung x AG style.

Top: Keith Haring
Skirt: Alexa Chung x AG
Shoes: Nike AF1
Socks: some random place in Tokyo

Hello lovelies!! I'm not gonna lie, I'm still in love with the holographic trend. Who doesn't want to feel like a space babe?! I recently bought a holo skirt from Glitters For Dinner, aka GFD, which is a brand that makes super cool matching sets (tops and skirts mainly). I only got the skirt, but I love it and I want to wear it constantly. I also had these shoes from Vagabond that I got a while ago from Urban Outfitters... so why not wear them together?

And here's some flowers to brighten up your Springtime...

Hello lovelies! My dad recently brought out a box filled with old photographs of his Australian family (fun fact: I'm an Australian citizen!) and we dug through it as a family. I was so fascinated by the old film prints from when my grandfather was pretty young in Australia. Look at this, it's all so interesting!

I always love digging through those boxes of old photographs at flea markets, and this is the first time I've gotten to do it with pictures of my own family members. Here's a few of my favorite that I picked out!

My grandfather thinking he's a cowboy:

Him being super cool in an original Jeep:

The classic rugby picture:
(my grandpa is the one on the far right, seemingly unfocused on whatever picture the team was trying to take)

The only color photo:
(I'm guessing this one wasn't taken in Australia)

Some of the girls in the family:

I wish my photos looked as cool as these. I guess I'll just have to stick to film and getting my prints on a CD because it's cheaper than actually printing them out. Curse you, modern technology!

And a song/video that fits the mood pretty perfectly:

ART: Watercolor on Vinyl

Hello lovelies!!!! The end of the school year is coming up quickly, and I've already finished loads of projects for my Advanced Studio Art class this year. We have Gallery Night (which is an exhibition of all Art, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Photography students' work) tonight at my school, so I thought I'd share two of my pieces that are on display that I'm really proud of. Both were done on vinyl, a material I've discovered I love.

For this piece, I was inspired by cave paintings; I'd like to think it's some kind of three-dimensional 'painting' from extraterrestrial beings, sort of like something humans in the distant future would think is ancient. Weird. I used watercolor and acrylic paint on vinyl, as well as a bit of white charcoal.

This piece was inspired by Tracey Emin for an "inspired artist" project we were assigned. I cut out a bunch of different pieces of vinyl, painted letters and backgrounds, and assembled it to create this quilt-like thought map.

Yay for art!!!

Helloooo lovelies! Lucky Shops is having a contest on Polyvore to win a $500 gift card towards their store, and the prompt was to create an outfit that embodies the spring trends. I made three, and I though I'd share them with you all:

Normally androgyny is saved for suits and other warm-weather occasions, but who says we can't take one from the boys once it starts getting hot? These shorts look like a feminized version of J.Crew or Vineyard Vines pair, but the crop top balances it out to make it flirty and fun. The red graphic on the shorts ties into the red-accented varsity-type sweater (because it'll probably get chilly out on the sea), as well as the simple, yet eye-catching sunglasses. And what androgynous outfit would be complete without a pair of loafers? These silver ones go with the whole ensemble, while still making a statement.

60s/70s by makennaa featuring black shoes

For this outfit, I was thinking late 60s (woodstock-era) and early 70s. I'm a strong supporter for double denim. DENIM IS ALWAYS IN STYLE!!!! This structured pop-art crop top is the perfect pair to the relaxed, high-waisted shorts, and the sunglasses match perfectly with a bit of red. If you're going to a music festival, you're not gonna want to wear any shoes other than sneakers. Take this from a Coachella veteran; I have worn my pair of Chuck Taylors every single time I've gone to a festival.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for florals. This crop top is just the perfect mix of flirty flower print and structured lines. The white skirt brings class and simplicity to the outfit, while the denim jacket makes it a little more casual and perfect for a day shopping, walking in the park, or going to lunch with friends on a beautiful spring day in Los Angeles. Also - I'm a sucker for a chunky sandal. The blue tassels on these tie the whole outfit together, but the lines are still simple enough to not be too overwhelming. The sunnies are the same; they add another layer to the outfit, but aren't too matchy-matchy. What I would do with $500 to buy this outfit!

THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE: Opening Ceremony, Magazines, Vinyl, and Doodles

Hello lovelies! I spent my whole entire Sunday lazing around, doing homework, studying, and appreciating a day of rest after a hectic past week... it requires a week to recover after Coachella!!! Here's some of the things that made me smile yesterday:

A few pins on my bedside table (next to my gemstones, of course) that I had taken off of my denim jacket the night before. The Japanese one is from Kyoto, Humbug is from a penpal, VAMS one is DIY, and Adidas is from another penpal. I love my penpals!!!

I got Panda Bear's Tomboy on vinyl at the record tent at Coachella, and it's been the only thing on my turntable the whole week. I played the whole thing through as I worked on sewing a kimono from Batik fabric my grandma got me during her trip to Bali - photos coming soon!

I also got to catch up on some magazine reading, hence the glasses because I am blind/too lazy to wear contacts on the weekends.

I read a bit of the free Vice magazine from Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles, as well as flipped through the Chloe Sevingy x Opening Ceremony lookbook. I got a pair of Acne jeans at OC on Saturday, so I'm basically ecstatic and nothing can bring me down for a very, very long time. This is my first pair of real, nice jeans, and I can't wait to wear them for a month straight and not wash them until I spill ramen on them or something. Everyone tells me you're not supposed to wash black jeans until you actually need to because they really don't get dirty, and that way, I won't stretch them out.

I also just admired my little wall set-up that's above my desk. Different sections of my room have different wall decorations, but this might be my favorite bit because it has drawings from two of my penpals from Wales and Norway, as well as some embroidery I did a while ago, and cut-outs from The Vaccines' ad for Levi's.

I hope everyone had a lovely, relaxing weekend!

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: Panda Bear T-Shirt

Hello lovelies!!! I'm so happy about this Panda Bear t-shirt that I got at Coachella from the merch stand last weekend. On that note, Coachella Weekend 2 starts in 2 hours, I miss it :'(

I feel like my American Apparel tennis skirt is my go-to skirt when I wear any band t-shirt. It matches with everything, and makes all those dude-length t-shirts look good when they're tucked in.

These shoes are one of my favorite purchases. They're adorable, super comfy, and also black/white so they go with everything. I'm lazy about painting my toenails, so whenever they're actually nice-looking, I break out these sandals (and my birkenstocks, of course).

shirt: Panda Bear vs Grim Reaper
Skirt: American Apparel
Shoes: Dr. Martens

I have a feeling this is gonna be my new favorite band shirt.

ALT-J: Live at the Santa Barbara Bowl

Helloooo lovelies! I drove a bit out to Santa Barbara last night to see Alt-J for the second time in two days, because seeing them at Coachella was just not enough for me. That was sarcasm. I just really love Alt-J. I'd never been to the Santa Barbara Bowl before, and it was such a nice surprise! The venue is beautiful, in a great area, and just the right size. My friend and I were standing in the GA section, and even though we got there 10 minutes before the opening band (Jungle) went on, we were super close to the front and had a perfect view.

Jungle was super groovy and entertaining. All of the band members were extremely into their music, and they had great personality and stage presence. I'd never heard of them before, but I definitely did enough their music.

Alt-J was even better than when I saw them at Coachella. They played more songs since there was no limited set time, and the crowd was there solely for Alt-J so we were all singing along. I was surrounded by a bunch of dudes that were super into Alt-J, and it made me so happy. At Coachella, I cried during "Dissolve Me" (it's one of my favorite songs and I just got super emotional, ok???), and I might've shed a tear when they played it last night too.

It was so nice to hear songs like "Bloodflood," "Warm Foothills," "Leaving Nara," and Interlude 1 & 2 that weren't played at Coachella. So nice.

It was also really great to not have a crazy crowd of LA kids that had waited all day to see the band at the venue. The crowd was super chill, nice, and included a lot of UCSB students. Gus (who plays the keys/vocals) expressed on-stage how much he and the band loved coming to the Santa Barbara Bowl, and I felt the same way. I'll for sure see a show at this venue again. Hopefully, it'll be when Alt-J comes back.
