Painting: Bluish

Leave it to me to name my artwork after songs, song lyrics, etc. For this in-school project, our assignment was to create a piece that comments on body image. I felt as if the whole "depicting plastic surgery/women in media/etc" was a bit cliché, so I opted for a different route. In the summer of 2013, I spent a week with a bunch of good friends at a camp in Lake Arrowhead. We went out on a boat trip, and ended up piling our legs on top of each other in the back of the boat; my friend had taken a photo and put it on Facebook, so I dug through her photo albums, found said photo, and used it as my inspiration. This relates to body image for me personally because throughout this week, everyone was dressing fashionably and always looked cute. Trust me when I say that's not what camp is normally like... but when you put a bunch of Los Angeles teenagers in the mountains for a week, that's what you get. The fact that people would be so focused on their appearances in a camp setting makes me laugh, but it was also something I thought needed to be commented on.

I gave the painting a blue hue as it invokes feelings of sadness for me... nostalgia, almost. Also, the sadness in the fact that we cared so much about what we looked like. It was sorta pathetic. But I do love how the painting turned out!

Melrose Trading Post Haul

Hello lovelies!! It's basically summer for me now, so my mom and I celebrated by driving into the city last weekend and visiting the Melrose Trading Post. Out of all the flea markets in the LA area, it has to be my favorite; don't get me wrong, I love the Rose Bowl flea market, but it's just too hot in Pasadena. Also, Pasadena is too far away.

I stopped by my favorite booth, Purrr Melrose, which has awesome dresses, skirts, skorts, separates, etc. all made out of super cool vintage-looking fabric. There's another booth that I love that sells vintage clothes that are slightly altered; for example, this black shirt was originally waist-length, but they cut and hemmed it into a crop top.

I wore: dress from American Apparel, shoes from Birkenstock

Black scallop crop top (vintage), gingham bralet (Purrr), denim skort (purr)

Outfit Of The Day: Free City

Hellooooo lovelies! When I was in 6th/7th grade, Free City brand hoodies were crazy popular. I think this was an LA thing (I'm pretty sure the only store is in Los Angeles), so no one else really understands, but everyone had one. They were also ridiculously expensive (I'm talking $200 for a pullover), but alas, super cute. I had one that I got on sale, lost it, and then was given one as a gift a few years ago. Although I don't get to wear it much (since it's a little hard to match it to my other clothes), I get a bit nostalgic and happy when I do. It's also insanely soft.

My Favorite Songs: April/May 2015

Hellooooo lovelies! So I've been neglecting my monthly list of favorite songs, and I decided that now (with summer approaching!) that I would compile a playlist of songs that I've been listening to since Coachella. Yes, I measure time relative to Coachella. Get ready.

On The Other Side - The Strokes
This song basically sums me up right now. Don't get me wrong; I'm not "tired of everyone I know," but I'm just a little bored with still being in high school. What can I say.

Faces In The Crowd - Panda Bear
My obsession with Panda Bear started around October last year, and it definitely hasn't slowed down. This song is fantastic, and so fun to play in my car whilst driving. I also just love Noah's vocals.

Play It Right - Sylvan Esso
Seeing Sylvan Esso at Coachella made me love them even more than I did before, so I've been listening to their self-titled debut album basically nonstop since then.

Minimal Affection - The Vaccines
If you know me, you know I my everlasting love for The Vaccines. It's safe to say that they are my favorite band of all time. This is a track off their new album, English Graffiti (which comes out next week), and it just fills my heart with happiness. Justin's weird vocals? Check. A Strokes-esque guitar line? Check. Half-assed, lazy lyrics that The Vaccines are notorious for? Check. Literally everything I could ever want in a Vaccines song.

Can't Do Without You - Caribou
I also saw Caribou at Coachella, and this song was definitely my favorite of the set. It was so much fun (and I can't wait to see Caribou again at Outside Lands this August!!!).

Best Friend - The Drums
One of my awesome penpals all the way from Poland sent me a mix CD with this song on it, and I've been listening to it like crazy ever since. I'm so excited to see The Drums at Outside Lands, too!

Vintage Red - Jay Jay Pistolet
Ah, Justin Young. You never fail to amazing me. This one doesn't need an explanation.

Young Love - The Mystery Jets (featuring Laura Marling)
I heard this song on the radio (maybe?) a while back and wrote it down on the notes on my iPhone. I'm pretty sure I never heard it when it came out because I'm not British/I was 10 when it was released and listened primary to Maroon 5 and Taylor Swift. Not that I don't love Taylor Swift.

I Didn't See It Coming - Belle & Sebastian
I didn't see Belle & Sebastian at Coachella (same time as Alt-J... let me die), and I recently re-watched God Help The Girl, so I've been in a total Belle & Sebastian phase the past couple of months. I played them on shuffle in my art class, and everyone hated it. WHY?? What are you afraid of??? Scottish people and happiness??

What were your favorite songs this month/recently?

BUTTONS OF THE DAY: Arctic Monkeys & The Beatles

Helloooo lovelies! I'd just like to point out the fact that I only have seven days left of my junior year in high school. What the??? Since when did that happen? Yesterday, I attended a ceremony for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Duke of Edinburgh award winners (if you don't know what that is, give this a look), and I was just thinking about how it felt as a Freshman to be receiving the Bronze award and looking at the juniors and seniors getting Gold, thinking "soon I'll be there!" Then, in the blink of an eye, my friends and I were standing on the stage, accepting our Gold medals. It's a bit crazy, honestly. Crazy, but exciting - I can't wait to participate in some awesome programs this summer, meet new people, and continue learning and growing. Oh, and writing some college essays. :)

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (Arctic Monkeys)
Abbey Road (The Beatles)

PROM: Makeup, Hair & Dress

Hello lovelies!!! So my very first Prom was on Saturday, and although it wasn't exactly what I expected, I did have a lot of fun. My school is relatively small, so our prom is for both Juniors and Seniors. Everyone goes, even if you don't have a date. This year, most of the seniors had dates, but most of the juniors just went with friends.

I decided since I will only get to go to prom twice, might as well look like an idiot for one of them. This means that I thought it would be fun to put star confetti all over my eyes. It was... it was a lot of fun. I used eyelash glue and confetti from the sale section at Urban Outfitters. The rest of my makeup I did on my own, too.

I got my hair done at Drybar, which is like a blow-out only place that I always go to. I told them to make my hair straight, but messy. I was going for a bit of a Cassie Ainsworth (from Skins) look; messy hair, glittery makeup.

Here's a photo of me and my best friends looking really stupid. My dress and shoes were both from ASOS.

Overall, I did have a fun night. The food at prom was great (which is the most important part), everyone looked awesome, and I got to hang out with my closest senior friends one more time before they graduate. We ended up going to one friend's house after and watched Harry Potter until 3 AM. It was fantastic.

What's going on?! I got this suede skirt a few weeks ago, and I've been feeling super seventies every time I wear it. I'm loving this trend, and after I've just finished a course in US history, I feel like I can identify with that whole counter-culture thing. Also, my dream is to go back in time and attended UC Berkeley during the heyday of student protests. Social justice! Civil rights! I feel like we need a bit of that in today's society... Visions of NYC tackles the hard stuff.

Skirt: ASOS
Shoes: (vintage) Dr. Martens 1460s

It's really starting to feel like summer, and I cannot wait. Today is my last AP exam; then, I just have two final exams that I can easily tackle, and maybe an SAT subject test. Almost done! Junior year, you will not win!!!

Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Hey y'all!!! Noticed how I didn't say "hello lovelies" this time? I'm feeling a little southern (south western? western?) today. Overalls get me in that mood. Overalls, you ask? My wonderful friend Sarah (hi Sarah!) recently gave me this overalls-dress thing from a flea market, and I decided to make it more versatile by splitting it up into a crop top and an adorable matching skirt. Turning one piece of clothing into three different outfits is what I do best.

Crop Top: American Apparel
Suede Skirt: ASOS

Thanks so much to Sarah again!!!! I'm in such a DIY mood with summer coming up. As much as I hate the heat, it is really fun to be able to make and wear lots of different skirts and crop tops. I'm doing a program at an art school this summer, so I feel like I have to start working on my artsy wardrobe. I hope there's nice weather wherever you are in the world right now!

Hello lovelies!! So I finally got a roll of film developed that I've had since October (yes, October). I love the way the photos have turned out! This is the last black and white roll I had from my time in Ireland in 2013, so it's kind of emotional for me because I feel like the film is somewhat connected to where I spent my time in Ireland. These photos are from Leo Carrillo beach in Malibu, CA, as well as in a suburb of San Francisco.

These were taken on 120mm Ilford film with a Diana F+.

Hello lovelies!! I'm sorry I haven't had super interesting posts this week; all of my time is being taken up by studying for my AP exams. I literally took pictures for this post in homeroom this morning.

iPhone case from Kenzo

Eye Sweatshirt from Kenzo

I love this brand. There's something so magical about walking into the Kenzo section at Opening Ceremony (trust me, I've done it in both NYC and Los Angeles) or at Bergdorf... They have the coolest organza sweatshirt right now that I'm dying for. Anyone want to give me $800 as a "you're almost done with APs" present? Anyone?! I'm not complaining, though. I'm in love with this sweatshirt and this phone case.

OUTFIT OF THE DAY: Opening Ceremony (and why is it cloudy???)

Hello lovelies! The past two days, it's been cloudy in my little suburb of Los Angeles, and I'm extremely perplexed. Hasn't it been 85+ degrees every day since February? What are these things you call "pants," and why can't I wear Birkenstocks today??? Many questions I need answers to. But in all seriousness, it was nice to actually put on a jacket on over my new Opening Ceremony shirt today. Shoutout to the fog.

Top: Opening Ceremony
Jacket: unknown
Pants: LF
Shoes: Dr. Martens

I said this yesterday, but I really want to wish everyone taking exams right now lots of luck! It's scary to think that every kind of test I take right now has some leverage in how the rest of my life plays out. I love standardized testing! (just kidding).

SPIRIT DAY: All White Everything

Hello lovelies!! I'm pretty sure Americans are the only ones that do this kind of stuff (correct me if I'm wrong), but today, my school is having a Spirit Day to sort of commemorate the beginning of AP exams and the upcoming end of the school year. At my school, each grade has its own color that it has to wear every time we have a spirit day; since my school's colors are red, white, and blue, it goes: Freshman - blue, Sophomores - red, Juniors (me!!!) - white, Seniors - tie dye. Here's my all white outfit for today:

Top: Arctic Monkeys (concert merch stand)
Skirt: Vintage
Shoes: Nike AF1s

To everyone that has exams coming up, I'm sending lots and lots of good wishes and luck your way! I have three APs and two final exams to look forward to in the next couple of weeks... we can do it!

Friday, May 1, 2015

Hello lovelies!! It's finally Friday, and I can't wait to spend the whole weekend taking SAT II subject tests and then studying for APs. So fun!

To lighten the mood, I stuck some stickers all over my AF1s. Now you know they're mine.

As I write this blog post on my school's computers, I've already gotten a compliment on my DIY'd babies. Have a lovely Friday, and a relaxing weekend!
