Well, happy Halloween! October is one of the best months of the year (I mean, my birthday is the 19th...), and Halloween is obviously part of that. I love dressing up in costume, and I trick-or-treated until 10th grade. I know, it's a little pathetic. I don't even like candy; I just love the whole vibe of the holiday so much.

I'm going to take some photos later tonight when I'm all dressed up in my Halloween costume, and those will be posted later this week. For now, I wanted to share some of my favorite Halloween inspiration to get you in the spooooooooky mood.

Yesterday, Panda Bear (a.k.a. Noah Lennox), who is one of my favorite artists, surprise released this nearly-30-minute mix of material created during the Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper sessions that he ended up not using for any official songs. It's spooky, it's dance-worthy, and it's just in time for Halloween.

If you really wanna get in the mood for Halloween, check out this cult classic sci-fi thriller, Donnie Darko. Honestly, if you haven't seen Donnie Darko yet, I don't really know what you're doing with your life... but it's the perfect movie for a spooky Hallow's Eve. Bonus points if you dress up as Donnie for Halloween: skeleton onesie and a dark hoodie. Easy.

Or, if you're feeling crafty, make a spell candle! I find these fascinating, and also just really cool pieces of artistry.

Wolf Alice (+ Made Violent, Drenge) @ The Fonda

Hellooooo wonderful people! If you haven't heard me say this before, I work for this awesome, Los Angeles based online and print magazine called Rogue. On October 13th, I got to go to the Wolf Alice concert at the Fonda in Los Angeles to take photos for our website. If you want to read a bit more about the show and see some more photos, check out my interview with Drenge (one of the rad opening bands) for Rogue Magazine!

OOTD: 2013 Throwback

It's so dark when I wake up for school, so this is the time of year that I can never take Outfit Of The Day pictures unless I remember after I get home/before I change into comfy clothes... what a shame. I've decided to dig into my archives for a throwback OOTD. Nothing much has changed, I would wear this today. 2013 seems so long ago; I took these photos on my old iPhone 4S! Good times.

This is a beach in Carmel-by-the-sea, one of my favorite little towns in California. It's on the way to San Francisco, and I try to go at least once a year. I love it because it's one of the only opportunities I have to wear sweaters.

Sweater: traditional wool fisherman's sweater from Galway, Ireland
Jeans: Free People
Boots: Dr. Martens

New Poshmark Listings

Hello lovely people! I haven't updated you on my Poshmark account in a while, so today, I'm going to share a few of my pieces that I'm selling. If you didn't know, Poshmark is this awesome app where you can buy and sell clothing. It's incredibly easy, and super fun! I've gotten some great deals on normally expensive pieces through Poshmark, and I've made a ton of money selling my old clothes, gifts I never wore, and things I'm not going to wear again.

I have a ton more on my Poshmark, and prices as low as $5! Brands I sell include American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, Topshop, ASOS, and much more. If you sign up with the code BYUHV, you get $5 towards your first purchase. Check out my profile (visionsofnyc) on the Poshmark app to get in on the fun :)

Three Wes Anderson Costumes: Suzy Bishop, Margot Tenenbaum, Max Fischer

Well, Halloween is just around the corner, and if you're anything like me, you're scrambling to find a good halloween costume because you didn't order one in time and all of the the good ones are sold out in whatever big Halloween store exists in your town for the months of September and October before vanishing. As I was Suzy Bishop from Moonrise Kingdom last year for Halloween, I thought these three DIY Wes Anderson costumes would be great ideas for anyone who doesn't have time to go out and get a costume; you probably can find all of these pieces in your house somewhere!

Suzy Bishop (Moonrise Kingdom)

All you need is a salmon/orange color swing dress, a white collared shirt, white knee highs, and oxford shoes. I had all of this in my (or my mom's) closet. My dad had binoculars, and I found an old wicker picnic basket from a tea set I had when I was younger.

Max Fischer (Rushmore)

For this one, raid your brother or your dad's closet. You'll need a blue button-down, a navy blazer, khaki pants, and a black and red striped tie. Red beret optional, but it definitely pulls together the outfit. Walk around on Halloween knowing you are the smartest one in the room.

Margot Tenenbaum (The Royal Tenenbaums)

For Margot, you'll need a collared tennis dress - preferably Lacoste. If you want to go out and buy a fur coat, by all means, go ahead; you can probably find one at a thrift store for much cheaper, or go for a faux option. You'll need dark brown loafers and a messenger bag. Don't forget Margot's signature red hair clip!

I hope everyone has a lovely Halloween!

Creating My College Application Portfolio

Well, last night I submitted my first college application. It's a scary feeling; half of me feels insanely relieved, and the other half feels frightened and nervous because now it's completely out of my hands whether or not I get admitted. I'm submitting a Visual Arts portfolio to every school I apply to, and so I thought I'd take the opportunity to share some of my work that I've never posted before.

This piece was one of two still life drawings that I included in my portfolio. I wanted to experiment with camouflage and the act of being one with nature. I feel most at peace with myself and the world when I am alone in nature, whether it be sitting in a towering forest, skiing the top of a snowy mountain, or swimming in a quiet ocean. The objects in this piece seem to fade into the background, which I accomplished by using lines that mimic the lines of the fabric.

In this still life, I explored the bends and buckles (the title means "distortion" in Icelandic) of glass reflections. While, on the outside, a glass bottle seems like a smooth and perfect exterior, it becomes clear that is not the case in observing the reflections on its surface. I used to be very self-conscious; for example, I hated the moles on my face. Now, instead of seeing them as imperfections, I see them as an aspect of my appearance that is unique to myself; these slight, beautiful distortions are the same that distort light through glass.

This is an ink print I did about a year ago. I used cheese cloth, lace, paper, and dried leaves to create this creepy cult-like silhouette. I actually didn't include this in my portfolio since I already had 15 pieces that I loved (a little more than this one), but I do like this piece a lot.

DIY Lazy Oaf-Inspired Sheer Dress

Hello lovelies! Recently, I was browsing the Lazy Oaf (one of my favorite brands) online shop when I stumbled across their new Lazy Oaf x Casper collection, just in time for Halloween. The piece that caught my eye immediately was this cute little, sheer dress that was embellished with Casper the Friendly Ghost appliqué patches.

I was instantly inspired to make my own, so I whipped out my sewing machine, made a quick trip to the fabric store, and started working. Instead of using Casper patches, I got a bunch of little white star appliqués. I used a dress I already owned (which was a similar cut as Lazy Oaf's) to create the pattern. Here's the final product:

I must say, I'm pretty impressed with myself. I don't use patterns often when sewing, and I made this nearly carbon copy in about two hours - it was well worth it. It only cost me around $15, too! I can't wait to think of some creative ways to wear this.

I Love You More Than Being Seventeen (Songs for 17)

I turned 17 yesterday (October 19th), and it doesn't feel much different. I guess I finally have had my driver's license for a year, so I can legally drive other people and drive between 11 PM and 5 AM... holla! The only other perks are being allowed to see R-Rated movies without my mom, and obviously, jamming along to these songs.

oh, she's only seventeen
I love you more than being seventeen
young and sweet, only seventeen
when I was seventeen, my mother said to me
can't you come back?
only seventeen, so she's probably not ready
she was just seventeen, you know what I mean?
they only want you when you're seventeen
