a los angeles girl in new york city

Saturday, December 31, 2016

I'm really enjoying making these short videos of my daily outings. I can't wait to start taking photos and filming more of my friends and our shenanigans back in New York City. One of my friends from the city was in town the other day, so I met her in Venice Beach and we walked along the boardwalk, taking in all of the strange sights.

I always love checking out the waterfront skate park when I'm down in Venice. Even though I can't skateboard for my life, it's a skill I've always wanted to learn, and I admire it ridiculously. It makes me so happy to see people (especially boys half my age) doing amazing tricks and just having a great time out there.

DTLA: lunch at LA Chapter and a lil OOTD

Today I headed into Downtown Los Angeles to have lunch with my cousin who recently moved from NYC... and of course, a little shopping. We went to LA Chapter, a restaurant inside of The Ace Hotel, which was delicious. The restaurant is filled with gold and mirrors; it really feels like Old Hollywood. I got a cappuccino (just as good as the ones I get in NYC) and the falafel veggie burger - the best one I've had since becoming a vegetarian a couple of months ago! My mom got a salad, which of course, I had to photograph too.

I coincidentally painted my nails with this shimmery gold color from OPI and wore my gold angel aura quartz ring.

After lunch, I walked around the area near The Ace Hotel and took some snaps of my outfit.

I'm wearing:

vintage slip cami
bralet from urban outfitters
vintage cow-print skirt
boots from acne studios
lady bag from mansur gavriel
vintage leather jacket

necklaces from topshop and xiv karats

Here's a lil youtube video with some outfit shots and tiny glimpses of Downtown LA:

CYTHEREAN VISIONS (my new youtube channel)

Hello everybody!! I hope you all had/are having a lovely holiday season... I definitely am. I'm so happy to be home in Los Angeles instead of in the freezing cold of New York City right now. Anyway, over the break, I've gotten a brand new camera and redone my old youtube channel, Cytherean Visions.

Here's a little bit about the etymology of my channel name:

I put a second video up yesterday that's a collection of little clips of me and my friends around Malibu, California. I'm really having fun with my new camera and experimenting with this style of film - somewhere between video art and traditional vlogging style.

I'll be making a bunch more videos while I'm home for winter break, and then diving into the world of New York City once I return to school. Let me know what you think!

I'm so excited to share this wonderful group of ladies based in the New York City area that has come together to form a community based on creativity and love. I know it sounds a bit cheesy, but we feel so grateful to have met each other; having a like-minded girl squad is such an important thing in a city like New York. We've created an Instagram account where we'll all be sharing our creative projects, so go ahead at give it a follow @femcollective!

"✨welcome to femcollective✨ a community for those who have always felt out of place. we are so excited to begin our journey 🌙 tag your friends and keep an eye out for our coming creations. let's start creating 🌹💫" - @femcollective

I've already posted some of the art I've made in university this past semester, and my wonderful friends have posted poetry, film photography, and more.

HAUL: Vintage & Reformation

This isn't as much of a haul as it is me just being excited about some pieces that I've bought recently.

I bought Reformation's Jammie Pant in Crimson on Black Friday and saved them until my first show playing with Gold Medal. I'm also wearing old Dr. Martens and my friend's high school t-shirt, if you were wondering. This photo and the following photo were taken on Seb's camera - check out his work here.

I bought this jacket at L Train Vintage in Bushwick and I'm in love!! It has the perfect shoulders for that Bowie vibe, and it makes me feel like a true rock star. I wore it for Gold Medal's second performance with a pair of vintage shiny acetate pants, a bralet from Urban Outfitters, and a silky top from Brandy Melville.

I also just got this amazing sweater from Courtyard Vintage (my favorite online/pop-up vintage store) in the mail. I'm actually wearing it as I write this in Columbia University's Butler Library - I should be studying for finals!!!! Alright, back to work.

It's nearing upon winter and I'm getting colder and colder. I'm flying back home to Los Angeles in just over a week. For some reason, pink has been very prevalent in my life right now; it's in the sunsets, my pictures, everything that surrounds me. It's that "slow burn" feel. Here's a couple of photos from my week in New York:

I stopped by the Mansur Gavriel pop-up store in Soho to see their collection of Lady Bags. I'm holding the small Lady Bag in black with black interior in this photo. I'm wearing shoes from ASOS, socks from UNIQLO, jeans from Brandy Melville, a dress from a local boutique, and a coat from Reformation, if you were wondering.

We get some really cool sunsets up in Morningside Heights.

My friends and I went thrift shopping in Bushwick over the weekend.

The sunsets are always so beautiful over the Brooklyn warehouses.

Henry, Cassidy, and Margaret complete the worn-out warehouse murals.

The band that I'm in played our second show this past weekend in an art studio on Columbia's campus. For some reason, the video that our friend Caroline took of us performing looks like screencaps from a coming-of-age movie prom scene.

Hello wonderful people! I'm having so much fun with this new (well, not really) Polaroid. Check out my first couple of photos using this camera here! Here's another round of shots from my adventures with my friends in New York City.

Nancy and Clara at the tea party.

Henry and I wearing matching hoodies.

Kea on the L Train.

Eugene at the Tea Party.

Ashby cooking ramen.

Noah falling asleep at the social gathering.

It's weird to think that right now is the time of greatest exposure to new people I'll ever experience. It's kinda weird, being thrown into a big university when you've spent all 13 years of your education so far in a grade no larger than 130 people. As my high school friends went home for Thanksgiving break and I stayed in New York, I thought a lot about my two worlds of "home" and "away."

This photo of me was taken by a New Friend, Nancy, at the beginning of the school year when it was still nice and hot out. We walked down to Riverside Park and found a nice tennis court where our other friend skated and Nancy took some photos.

I snapped this blurry iPhone shot while waiting at the subway station for my friend from high school to arrive. He goes to school in Maine now, but he was spending Thanksgiving Break with family in New Jersey, and decided to take the train in for the day to explore the city.

I took this selfie as I was getting ready to go out with a friend I met at a summer program in 2015 that now goes to school in Connecticut but is from Manhattan. She was in town for Thanksgiving break, so we went to a part in Bushwick that my friends were DJing at. If you were wondering, my necklaces are from Topshop and my bodysuit is from Urban Outfitters.

One of my best friends from high school decided to make a spontaneous trip up from DC (where he's at college) to NYC with a couple of his friends. We met up at one of my favorite brunch spots, Bluestone Lane, and I had to take a photo of our drinks. Sorry to be basic - Bluestone Lane has some of the best coffee I've had in the city so far.

I watched the sunrise over the weekend with a New Friend, Henry, who might as well be an Old Friend - he's also from LA, and not only do we have a ton of mutual friends, but we've been in the same room multiple times and just never met until now.

RED FOR THE HOLIDAYS (outfit of the day)

Helloooo lovelies! Happy Thanksgiving to all who are in the United States. This holiday, for me, is just about being with family and eating good food. Pumpkin pie is probably my favorite dessert ever. I'm currently in New Jersey at my uncle's house since it wouldn't really make sense for me to fly all the way back to California for only a couple of days. I took these photos while I was out running some errands around the city yesterday; I think red is the best color for the holidays. It's so festive!!!

Top: Alexa Chung for AG
Coat: Topshop
Jeans: Acne Studios
Sneakers: Acne Studios

I also found this really cool kaleidescope in the Whitney Museum's gift shop, so I had to take a couple of photos of the colors inside.

One of my errands was dropping off some clothes at an apartment in Chelsea, and I snapped this photo of the beautiful fall sky from the elevator.

I recently got an old Polaroid 660 Land Camera from my aunt - she found it when cleaning out her apartment - so I splurged on some film from The Impossible Project to take some cool shots of my friends and the city. Each film cartriage only has eight photos and I messed up on one of them so there's only seven here, but I'm so happy with how they turned out!

I shared this photo in my last post about protests in NYC, but this is a better version since I actually got around to a real scanner. The following photo is another scene from the same protest.

Thank you to my beautiful friends and this beautiful city!!!

It's been a wild past 10 days here in New York. I've been attending various protests around the city, and I thought I'd share some photographs with you. I recently got an old Polaroid 600 camera from my aunt, and I used it to snap this photo of the Sanctuary Campus rally at Columbia yesterday:

I marched from Union Square to Trump Tower the day after the election with a bunch of friends. I got a couple of videos, but only one photo; nevertheless, I think it's powerful.

A bunch of wonderful girls started a mobilization group on campus, and we sat out for hours on end holding signs in front of the statue of Alma Mater last week.

I saw these Post-It notes in the Union Square subway station coming home from a concert at Webster Hall last Sunday night.

Finally, I have this poster (that I made for the first protest on November 9th) taped up on my dorm wall now.

To my fellow Americans, I hope you're holding in there. If you have anything on your mind, leave me a comment - I'd love to chat. It's really important in trying times to express your feelings!!

What's up!! Clearly, I've been less active on this blog since I've moved to NYC and started studying at Columbia, but for good reason. Other than my classes, I've been getting involved in a ton of extracurriculars that I want to share with you.

If you want to read some more of my work that's not on this blog, check out Written Citizen and Hoot Magazine. Hear my thoughts on Being Blonde, check out my guide on How To Cry In New York City, and discover the awesome musician Princess Nokia. I've been writing for Written Citizen for the past couple of months, and I just joined the team at Hoot Magazine (Columbia University's only fashion mag) as the Blog Editor. Also, my art and music was recently featured on Ratrock Magazine. Here's an awesome photo they took of me for the website:

Other than all of the student organizations I'm a part of here on campus, I'm also in a band!!! I'm singing and doing our drum loops live. Here's a rad photo my friend and fellow band member, Seb, took of one of our practices:

We're going to start playing shows at the end of the month, which I'm really excited about. More photos (and audio) from that project coming soon.
